Pinny Prayer Flags for Peats Ridge Festival 2008 - 53 vintage pinny aprons strung throughout the Sculpture Garden
Pinny Prayer Flags was a little something I'd been wanting to do for simply ages, mostly because my pinny apron collection was overflowing and needed a serious outing. Put very simply, the project was 53 vintage aprons strung throughout the Sculpture Garden of the 2008 Peats Ridge Festival, which happened over the new year in Glenworth Valley, just north of Sydney.
The project was, in essence, a jumbled catalog of time + effort spent by persons unknown, embroiled in both handicraft and household duties, in times and locations beyond my ken. The aprons themselves were gathered from a vast array of op-shops and elderly relative's linen cupboards across Australia, but some contributions came from the Czech Republic, Canada and Wales. And they all spent the last 4 days of 2008 strung together and a-blowin' in the wind, releasing their secret recipes slowly into the festival air.

The Sculpture Garden area of the festival became our home for 4 days - it had the best music (inside the 'Hills Hoist' tent), the best bit of river to swim in, and of course all the sculptures, most of which were playfully interactive and ALL of which were made from recycled materials. Both the Sculpture Garden and the Hills Hoist tent were run by the downright gorgeous Reef Knot crew (who are splendiferous but hard to find online - here at least is their Facebook Group)... and what time was not spent swimming, yakking or grooving was taken up with making grand plans for pieces for next year's festival. A corker of a way to bring in the new year.
